Welcome!

Our Grandmothers were experts at stretching their grocery dollars to feed large families! At times, it was necessary for them to be very creative cooks - making do with what they had on hand or what was readily available.

Take a step back in time learn how Grandma did it - much of her knowledge can be applied to our modern households!

Crazy Cake

3 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 cup cocoa
3/4 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups cold water

Sift flour, sugar, salt, soda and cocoa together in a 9 x 13" ungreased cake pan.  Make three wells.  Pour oil into one well, vinegar into the second, and vanilla into the third well.  Pour cold water over all, and stir well with fork.  Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes, or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.
